Description: |
The research has two main objectives: first, is to understand Māori economic interests in the marine environment and how Māori value these resources in financial and nonfinancial terms as a basis for informing sustainable management of marine resources by Māori and others; second, analysing examples of how Māori organisations are using mātauranga Māori to develop and apply innovation in products, processes, systems and services within the Māori marine economy. The research involved the following main outputs: (1) a literature review; (2) a report mapping the Māori marine economy in terms of its institutional environment and the value of fisheries quota assets; (3) a report on case studies of marine-based Māori enterprises; (4) a report on kaitiaki-centred business models, traceability and innovation within the Māori marine economy.
